Dear Andrei:

Today our KL-10 processor arrived, a gift from D.E.C.
in recognition of their use of the ideas from Foonly. The recognition
extends somewhat further; some of the engineering drawings of
the KL-10 are signed S. Foonly, which is a nice gesture, since
none of the actual drawings were used.

Curiously, the Foonly project itself has revived. Dave
Poole spent two years working for Systems Concepts Inc. in San
Francisco, then decided he would like to try to revive the project
and asked me who might want it, and I suggested Information
International who need a very fast PDP-10 like machine for
the big optical character recognition system they make. They can't seem
to get what they consider a good price from D.E.C. on KL-10s. Dave and
friends have figured out how to redesign the machine in emitter
coupled logic which will make it faster, and III is almost at the
point of deciding whether to build it.

I have written a new paper on home terminals, which was
well received at the AAAS meeting, a paper on ascribing mental
qualities to machines that may be published in a philosophical
journal, and a small paper on heuristic search. I am also giving
the banquet speech at the convention of the Science Fiction Writers
of America which should be fun. Besides that I may get married.

I hope things are going well with you, my regards to Nina,
Vasya, and Anyuta, and many thanks for continuing to send the
encyclopedia, volume 22 of which has just arrived. I am looking
forward with some curiosity to the next two volumes.
